5-8 Journal Making! Start saving now...

Students will be working on creating a visual journal. They will combine sketches, visuals and words in a way that lets others know who they are. For the next few weeks, students will gather materials. I would encourage them to use a gallon size zip lock bag to store their artifacts in.

They will collect labels, doodles, sketches, poems, stamps and receipts that reflect what they like and what interests them. They should collect images that they like from other sources. Examples include photos from magazines and newspapers, ticket stubs, brochures, and personal photos of their family and friends. They can make photocopies on their scanners at home or I will make copies of any photos, so that it is only paper used in the journals. They will also create portraits and sketches in class of themselves, their friends, family, or pets, places they like, sports they are interested in, coins, cars, flowers, cell phones, etc.

Once a large selection of work is collected, students will organize their images into a series of five 6 x 9” compositions. The images selected should tell a story or relate to one another.

November 18 - next Art Literacy Meeting!

Meet me in my classroom at 8:30 until 8:45 to learn about the next featured artist for our K-6 volunteers. There will be donut holes...

ATTENTION PROCRASTINATORS: Paper requirements

Much to their chagrin, students in 5-8 grade are responsible for writing on paper per trimester. While you think me cruel and unusual, I teach to the state standards for Art, which requires in addition to demonstrating art skills and knowledge, that students describe, analyze and interpret Art. Writing this paper will not impede your height nor running ability and you just might learn something.

I encourage you to bring your paper in prior to the due date for feedback. Few take advantage of this opportunity for direction and suggestions. Papers are to be typed and turned in no later than noon on the due date OR LOSE ONE LETTER GRADE per school day that they are late.

We will discuss the paper in class, with examples shown and we will cover a rough draft together. Please feel free to contact me with questions or comments. Please explore other resources than the internet. Papers turned in a week prior to the due date receive an extra credit point.

Students will write a 3-5 paragraph (minimum) TYPED paper that will answer some basic biographical information on the artist. Who are they? When did they work? What type of art did they make? How did they become an artist (if known)? Why are they important?

In addition, students will identify (title and date when known) one piece of artwork by this artist. Using Elements of Design (line, shape, value, texture, color, mood), students will critique the piece. Describe what you are seeing!

THE LINE!!

We began the school year by creating covers for our portfolios. Now that our schedule of 3 day school weeks is over, we are starting our first unit. Students in all grades will begin working on comics. We will start by making a flip book in class, showing action and movement and then begin work on facial features, focusing on expression. We will move on to figure drawing and movement, action, landscape and setting mood, dialogue and finally costume. In anticipation of the book fair next month, students will create artwork in keeping with the theme of "Everyday Heroes." Artists will create their own action hero and ultimately, a comic. I will be looking for a volunteer to help with layout for the comic book our school will be making, at the end of the unit.

Thanks!

2010-2011

Welcome back or welcome to St. Joe's! We have a big year ahead of us. One that promises to be filled with much paint, pen, pencil, sculpture and all-around filth. I will be updating this site regularly with photos and descriptions of what we are up to in Art class, so please check in.

The beginning of the year starts with the most basic element of art - the line. In all grades, we will be working on creating portfolio covers for our portfolios. The portfolios will remain in my classroom throughout the year and will not go home until the Art show in May. All artwork will go home at that time. Particularly in the younger grades, I will occasionally send work home that is more seasonal or I just cannot manage the space to store in my room. Portfolios are kept so that I can accurately grade the development and improvement of all my gifted student artists. You are ALWAYS welcome to drop in to look at the artwork or just to chat.

I look forward to seeing all of you this year!

The Shine & Show this year was awesome!! The pictures do not do justice to the artwork and the scale of the installation. Plus there is no black light, fog machines or Christmas lights to add to the atmosphere as there was at the show! This is the largest art show I have produced, and it would not have happened without the assistance of some truly amazing individuals. Tammy LaFrazia, Laura Veasey and Karen Zack are -as always - my saving graces, violating nearly every OSHA law to ensure the exhibit was hung and looked better than imagined.

Ilene Stemple has not only been an amazing Art Literacy volunteer for me all year long, but she also was building blisters working to set up the show. Thank you to Mrs. Nebels, who toiled for two full days while managing a 3 year old, setting up artwork in the stairs and halls. Traci Kezar worked all year as a fearless Art Literacy volunteer and saved the day by assisting with set up for the show. Deb McGovern, the guardian angel of the Art Literacy program, went above and beyond the call of duty again, this time enlisting not only her talents to hang artwork, but also enlisting her own children to help move artwork after school. Thank you to Lisa Sandstrom, Estella McCoy and Laura Kok for hanging artwork and helping out wherever needed. Thank you to Patty Keller for painting the awesome sign on the fly. Robyn Cima, Maria Arthur, Missy Beard and Melinda Lee were incredible! Thanks for all the help. Thank you to Cecelia Ongley for pulling all the paper and helping set up the show.

Thank you to Jill Watson, Karyn Stankye and all the room parents for hanging your classroom's artwork. Thanks to the amazing Josh Seitz, who not only provided excellent music and ran the sound system for the runway, but who also worked until 7 p.m. the night before the show, helping me with the audio. Oh, and he pulled a Vanna White for me at the assembly, bringing in the painting and flowers. Amazing!!

ATTENTION ALL CLUTTER BUGS! Donations wanted

As we head into our new year, we are charging into our space unit. I am looking for some materials to be donated, so as not to tamper with my art material fund.

If you have a string of working (even mostly working is fine) white or colored minature lights, I'll take them!

To create an airplane/machine of flight engine, anyone with a broken fan can find me!

Black roofing tarp (material like the bags for yard waste)

I'll post more wants as the arise! THANKS!!!!!
